my 10 year old is now at an age when i can safely take him to gallery shows. he is curious, absorbed and very engaged with the art he sees. we can actually talk about the work! my husband and i used to try to take our boys to shows years ago but it was way too stressful for us. you just never knew what potentially fragile or precarious installation could be ruined by a moment's distraction. somehow one or both boys would inevitable end up rolling on the ground.
a couple of weekends ago my older son had a play date with a fellow 10 year old on 24th street, just going to see art. it was so much fun! i was able to appreciate the art and slow down in a way that i do not think i'd have done if i were on my own. i found myself being more generous with my time and opinions. i wanted my child to see the inspiration, concept and hard work on display, not take it as an opportunity to be critical.
here are some photos from a few of the exhibits.
